We’ve already seen some major changes to the Colonie landscape in 2014. Hoffman’s Playland closed its Latham gates and packed up for its move to downtown Albany, while the Skylane and Blu Bell motels on Central Avenue were closed and torn down for much different reasons.
More changes are in store for Colonie in 2015, beginning with a possible new law regarding motels that have become boarding houses for the homeless. After deteriorated conditions at the Skylane and Blu Bell led town officials to seek their demolition, the t `own is considering a law where other motels must adhere to guidelines such as providing kitchenettes and sleeping accommodations. Hopefully, the delayed vote on the law will take place soon, and those who need these motels so they can stay somewhere reasonably comfortable will be protected from bad owners.
Of greater concern is what is happening with Colonie’s Industrial Development Agency. The IDA allegedly failed to report to the state what it doled out in tax breaks given to local businesses, which could be into the millions of dollars. If this proves true, the IDA could — and should — be disbanded. You can’t play fast and loose with the law, even to create a bigger and better business base. The Town Board will be meeting Jan. 14 to discuss the matter, so we will hopefully know more about what is going on.
Other changes coming to Colonie include construction of the Shoppes at Latham Circle, the box store mecca that is replacing Latham Circle Mall. Work has already begun on some of the stores, which will include a new Walmart that will replace the one at Latham Farms. Also, there could be a new office and hotel complex at the corner of Albany Shaker and Wolf roads, depending on when First Columbia’s project gets its final approval from the Town Planning Board. And Sonic — the famed chain of drive-in fast food restaurants — announced it will build its first Capital District location in Latham.
There will be many more changes to the town coming in the next 12 months, all of which we will keep our eyes open for. Let’s hope that these changes will be positive ones.
