Dear Editor,
The following is a cautionary tale concerning the prospect of Sinclair Broadcasting purchasing Tribune Media resulting in extending its reach to 72 percent of American households. In a democracy, a free press is at our foundation. This is dedicated to my former students, that they may be reflective, using writing skills to formulate opinions, and that they be courageous enough to use their voices, to stand up and be heard.
Sins of Sinclair
Sinclair, the sinister puppet master, wrapped the strings around his thorny knuckles with precision, weaving a web of intentional deceit. His puppets dangled awkwardly, weightless without earth’s pull and thoughtless without gravity of reflection. The puppet master’s shallow eyes revealed no soul as he glared at his timepiece, persistent that the act be done not a second too late and not a second too soon. ‘All together now, 1, 2, 3,’ he mused as he gave the tug of ultimate control. The sensation was thrilling and seductive. It was so addictive that barely had the deed been done that he yearned for another pull at the strings. And then as he peered down upon his wooden tools marching in unison, he spotted an errant piece of his masterful puzzle going astray, resisting his control. He was so enraged by this unsynchronized, irreverent protest that he started to shake uncontrollably. The strings on his fingers were no longer a perfect control panel, he had a glitch … and then another glitch, until the symmetry of the strings dissolved into a ratted mess. The Eagle freed itself from the lines and ascended into the spacious blue sky. The view was magnificent. The majestic mountains a glorious purple, the grain a lovely amber, the plains bountiful, while patriots and pilgrims paraded together in celebration of a democracy redeemed.
You are your body and mind and you are your own puppet master. Treat yourself with dignity and respect and when something feels wrong, have the courage to stand up and speak up, no matter the consequences. I only wish that our local WRGB had been willing to do as much. Next time I hope they carry a conscience and a pair of scissors before robotically submitting to power.
Respectfully submitted,
Felicia Bordick
