Born out of necessity when the products were not easily accessible for his business’ projects, H.U.R.B. Landscaping founder Ulderic ‘UB’ Boisvert developed his own.

Today, UB’s topsoil, mulch and compost can be purchased at H.U.R.B. Landscaping’s Greenwood Farms on Albany Street in the western end of Colonie – a store founded by UB and his wife, Rachel Boisvert.

“We started making our own mulches, topsoil and compost because quality products are hard to find,” said Rachel. “We started selling them retail about 10 years ago.”

Rachel said the mulch is made mainly of soft woods, unlike other products that incorporate pallets and other yard waste.

“Our topsoil is blended with compost and sandy loam, so it’s good for growing grass, vegetables, flowers – pretty much everything,” said Rachel.

Mulch and topsoil are only some of the products offered by Greenwood Farms. The store also sells crushed and washed stone for landscaping projects, annual flowers and hanging baskets, and farm fresh eggs.

“We’ve had chickens for about five years, now our kids take care of them as part of their chores; it’s not unusual to see both of our kids helping out around the farm.” said Rachel.

H.U.R.B. Landscaping is going strong in its 37th year of operation, too. UB works with homeowners and developers on residential and commercial projects.

“If you need a redesign of your front yard, for example, we would come out and discuss design options, tear out the existing landscaping and create new landscaping,” said Rachel.

Still, the Boisverts see Greenwood Farms becoming a larger part of their family business.

Greenwood Farms is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information about store products, delivery services or to discuss landscaping projects, call 518-464-5030 or visit hurblandscaping.com.
