NEW SCOTLAND — Something Olde, Something New, a consignment shop at the intersection of Routes 85 and 85A, started out as a small business dealing only in clothing and continues to grow.
Julie Hilland and Karen Moses started the sore more than 20 years ago. Nestled between Slingerlands’ Greek Revival homes of the 1800s and an attractive New Scotland that continues to develop new housing, Something Olde, Something New takes on more than just the oft-recited matrimonial saying.
A walk through the store can lend a shopper the feeling of visiting a museum; except, there’s the opportunity to take these exhibits home.
“But, we have a lot of new, contemporary items, too,” said Moses. The store features all sorts of wares from women’s apparel and accessories like designer handbags, jewelry and shoes to vintage home accessories like dishes, china and furniture to linens. “The idea is that we’re taking something old and making it new to them.”
They don’t sell merchandise on eBay or any other online marketplace but rather use a website to urge people to come to the store. And the store is jam-packed with all sorts of things like dressers and chairs and glassware and clothing and linens.
“There’s something for everyone here to shop for,” said Hilland. “If you’re not a clothes person, we have linens, we have home decor.” Something Olde, Something New also carries a variety of home furniture. Of which, the mid-century style is the most popular. Hilland said the quality of the furniture, compared to the pressboard of some of today’s pieces, stands out along with the character its style. “There’s just something for everyone.”
