Albany County sheriff’s deputies stopped a Mechanicville woman for speeding on Route 9W in the and found a U.S. postal box in the vehicle containing marijuana.
Police stopped driver Meno Eason, 26, around 4:45 p.m., on Saturday, April 12, and allegedly observed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the inside the vehicle. There were three passengers in the vehicle. Inside the vehicle was a U.S. postal box mailed from Nevada, which Ishaan I. Smith, 25, of Hudson, said belonged to him, according to police. All four individuals, including a juvenile, were transported to the Albany County Sheriff ’s Public Safety Building.
Smith allegedly told police the postal box contained a microphone and three speakers. Police asked Smith if he would consent to the postal box being searched, but he denied the request. Police allegedly discovered Smith to have 20 grams of marijuana on him.
Police obtained a search warrant for the postal box and, with the assistance of a State Police canine, found six and a half pounds of marijuana inside it.
Smith was arrested and charged with criminal possession of marijuana in the second degree, a felony, criminal possession of marijuana in the firth degree, endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was arraigned New Scotland Town Court and remanded to the Albany County jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.
Eason was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed of a motor vehicle in the third degree, unlawful possession of marijuana and speeding. She was released on an appearance ticket.
Fellow passenger Casey M. Hayner, 23, of Mechanicville, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, and was released on an appearance ticket.
