A Bethlehem Central High School student was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 2 for allegedly hacking into the school’s server, according to police.
A 16-year-old student, who’s name was not released because of his age, was arrested for allegedly uploading a virus onto the school’s server sometime between Jan. 16 and Feb. 1, said police. The student was caught after an investigation by school officials. Police did not indicate if the student gave a reason for his actions.
School officials told police the student gained access to the server without authorization and the virus was an `extreme inconvenience to staff and disturbed the learning process of students at the high school,` according to Lt. Tom Heffernan.
`The district became aware that a student had gained unauthorized access to the school server on Feb. 2 and notified the proper authorities. There was no interruption in instruction,` said district spokesman Bill DeVoe. `It is not the district’s policy to discuss disciplinary issues in regard to its students.`
The student was charged with computer tampering in the 4th degree, a misdemeanor. He was released into the custody of his parents and will appear in court at a later date.
