A DWI enforcement effort held over a three-day period in Albany County resulted in 17 arrests of drivers who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office reported that 648 traffic stops were initiated, with 333 citations issued for a variety of violations.
The sweep was held Dec. 16-18. A similar saturation patrol held at this time last year resulted in 13 arrests for DWI.
During this year’s patrol, the Sheriff’s Office reported that 73 designated drivers reported to authorities that they were a designated driver for an intoxicated individual.
As part of the countywide enforcement effort, police arrested a man they say was traveling at a high rate of speed through the city of Albany. The Sheriff’s Office said Stephen Koenig, 29, was spotted traveling at high speeds, and eventually hit speeds of 90 miles per hour before coming to a stop on Euclid Avenue and Greenway in the city. Koenig faces multiple charges, including DWI. Authorities said Koenig had a previous DWI conviction in July 2008.
