Firefighters and dive teams from several departments searched Sunday and Monday for a man missing in Galway Lake since Sunday, Oct. 30, and around 2:25 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, State Police divers recovered the body of a 23-year-old sailor, according to police reports.
Around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, State Police in Saratoga received a report of a man missing from Saratoga Springs Naval Station, according to police reports. The man was with a group of other sailors at the time and Galway Fire Department, Corinth Dive Team and South Glens Falls Dive Team all responded to assist, as well as State Police Aviation, according to police reports.
The diver is not being identified at this time pending family notification, said police, but it is believed he sent for a swim in 40 degree water around 7 p.m. Sunday night. Soon after entering the water, he called out for help to his companions but they were unable to see him due to darkness, said police.
An autopsy will be scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 1, and toxicology tests will be performed but police said at this time there is no indication of alcohol involvement. The investigation is ongoing.
