Colonie police arrested a suspect involved in the stabbing incident that killed a Colonie woman at the Super 8 Motel on Central Avenue on Sunday, Aug. 21.
Rupert B. Alberga, 29, of Albany has been charged with Murder in the second degree, a felony, for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend Mary J. Fyvie, 23, of Colonie in the torso, causing her to bleed to death.
Colonie Police Lt. Robert Winn said that they cannot discuss anything Alberga said or did not say while speaking with police, but he was cooperative with investigators before going into surgery on Sunday.
The Colonie Police Department arrived at the motel after receiving a call from Alberga reporting a female and he needed assistance after suffering multiple lacerations caused by a knife.
According to the police report, Fyvie was pronounced dead on the scene after being stabbed twice in the torso and one cut on her hand. Winn said an autopsy, performed by Dr. Jeffrey Hubbard at Albany Medical Center Hospital, revealed she had died as a result of blood loss. Winn would not reveal how long she had been dead before police had arrived.
Alberga had suffered a laceration on his arm and was transported by Colonie EMS to Albany Medical Center. It has not been confirmed as to how Alberga received the cut, but Winn said the possibility of it being self-inflicted has not been ruled out.
A knife was recovered from the motel room, Winn said, but it has not been definitively classified as the weapon used to kill Fyvie. It has been sent out to a lab for testing.
Winn said the two individuals involved would be classified as boyfriend and girlfriend. They had also been living from motel to motel along Central Avenue with their last known long-term address being Green Park Inn at 1517 Central Avenue. The reason as to why the couple did not have a permanent address is being withheld because the investigation is continuing, though Winn said the drug activity that was being monitored in that area will be a part of the investigation.
Winn said that there were no witnesses who reported they had heard anything going on in the motel room.
The case has now been turned over to the Office of the Albany District Attorney, which has confirmed the charges and said a court date will be set by a grand jury in the next 45 days.
