In a world of big box, one-size-fits-all furniture stores, Kugler’s Red Barn continues its mission to provide custom-made pieces to discerning customers.
The family-run business opened in 1977 in a red barn on Consaul Road in Colonie, said owner Scott Henderson, and their business model hasn’t changed much since then.
“About 80 to 90 percent of our sales is custom-ordered furniture,” said Henderson. “All of our furniture is 100 percent American made. No other furniture store offers that. And we can talk to the people making the furniture.”
A business in a barn might lead people to conclude there is a country theme inside, but Henderson said that’s not the case at Kugler’s. He tries to keep up with what’s popular with furniture buyers these days.
“The styling has maybe gone towards a more transitional look these days. It’s like a modern contemporary or a modern casual look,” said Henderson.
Because the furniture is custom made, Henderson said Kugler’s is a store where people should stop in, rather than try to order online.
“Everybody wants everything on a (phone) app these days. With our stuff, you can’t really do that,” said Henderson. “You really have to come in and try it out because there are so many options in style and fabrics.”
And because most of the items sold are custom made, Henderson said there is a price range to consider. However, he added the prices are reasonable.
“A lot of people think custom made is too expensive, but when you custom order, everything is built to order,” said Henderson. “I can offer a choice of wood and fabric to fit their budgets. Our prices aren’t expensive, and you get more quality for less money.”
Henderson said Kugler’s is still feeling the effects of the economic downturn, but he is optimistic that once people come through the barn doors and see what’s available when they order their furniture, they will make the investment.
“Most people think we’re more country because we’re located in a barn, but we have a lot more to offer,” said Henderson.
