Helping people achieve overall wellness

A Delmar native has returned to her hometown and opened a private practice offering help to people looking to overcome obstacles in life and achieve overall wellness.

Marian Truax, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, opened her private practice around two months ago on Delaware Avenue. She continues to work for Equinox Inc., providing outpatient mental health services, and she previously worked as a clinician at the Center for Disability Services.

At her private practice, she offers an array of mental health services, which includes treating depression, anxiety and stress related to work or family.

Truax got interested in her career because she wanted to provide people with the skills to get through the “ups and downs” in life and advocate for people who might not otherwise have a chance for a fresh start.

“It is rewarding to see someone progress and feel good about themselves,” she said. “With the right tools and the right work, people can grow.”

Staying in Albany County was important, too, because she said there are many services available she can refer people to for further support. Opening her office close to the city also allows many people to more easily fit a visit into their schedule, such as during a lunch break or after work.

What sets her apart from other service providers is her encouraging approach and background in treating a variety of mental health issues.

“I offer more of a gentle, supportive and therapeutic intervention,” she said. “I am respectful and non-judgmental. I have many years of experiences with different populations, so I have an array of knowledge to work from.”

When working with a clients, she will meet them where they are at and “work together” toward personal betterment. She said it is important people don’t feel “shamed” or criticized and are not pressured into making changes.

There has been a move toward treating mind and body with mental health, she said, because both aspects are intertwined.

“Taking care of yourself and your body takes care of overall wellness and a better outlook on life. If we take care of ourselves, our minds will be healthier,” she said.

She primarily treats 18- to 65-year-olds, but has worked with people of all ages. For more than six years, she has worked for Equinox, and at the Center for Disabilities she worked with people facing addiction issues.

She accepts most major insurance providers including CDPHP, MVP and Empire Plan, but if someone doesn’t have insurance she works out an agreement that will be affordable for a client.

Truax’s office is located at 274 Delaware Ave. in Delmar. For more information, call her at 878-6206 or email [email protected]
