Junk King takes out the trash for you

Nearing its second year, Todd Porter’s Ravena-based junk-hauling business, Junk King, prides itself for its high level of customer service and effective recycling policy. Junk King, a business with high referrals and a large amount of repeat customers, differs from other junk-hauling services since they provide the labor.

Customers “just have to point.” Porter said, “We’ll take (junk) from attics and basements,” wherever the customer needs. Junk King’s team of five local employees, with two hauling trucks, removes the junk and recycles, gives it to charity, or takes it to the landfill for customers, making junk removal easier and more cost effective.

As a registered E-waste consolidation facility with the Department of Environmental Conservation, Junk King is one of the greenest junk removal services in the Capital District. Since Porter’s business handles the removal, he said that he and his team are able to separate what can be donated to charity, goes into a landfill and into recycling.

“We recycle 60 to 80 percent of everything we take,” Porter said.

When it comes to electronics, Porter’s company makes sure items such as televisions and computers are properly disposed of. “We have recycling and collection events,” said Porter. Customers bring their old or broken electronics to Junk King, where the proper measures to dispose of the electronics are taken.

In association with Earth Day this past April, Junk King participated in an E-waste collection and recycling event. Porter set up his trucks, and people brought their unusable or unwanted electronics to Junk King to be properly recycled.

Junk King has provided its services for other events as well. It sponsored the Tri-City ValleyCats Tennis Ball Toss and a used one of its trucks to aid in a Little League field cleanup. Porter said he tries to do one charity event a month, from hauling books for a book drive to charity cleanups.

Since its first year of business, Junk King has expanded its offered services, gaining the business a wide range of customers, to include light demolition and yard cleanup. Porter said a lot of people have private documents that need to be properly shredded and disposed of, so Junk King also now offers document shredding as part of its hauling service.

“We’ve done a lot of yard cleanup with the storms,” Porter said, especially downed branches. He said the recent tornado that went through Schenectady County in early June kept his business busy with clearing branches and debris.

Junk King goes out of its way to dispose of any junk the customer wishes to get ride of. Sometimes Junk King must do a bit of “creative hauling,” Porter said, and carefully dispose of items sometimes larger than doorways, such as ride-on tractors and pianos.

But mostly, Junk King does run-of-the-mill cleanouts in garages and attics. To schedule a free estimate or to learn more, go to www.junk-king.com, or call 1-800-995-JUNK(5865).
