In October 2011, Todd Porter opened his junk removal business, Junk King, in Ravena. In the time since then, Junk King has more than doubled in size and developed immensely as a business. A full service junk hauler, Junk King will come to you and haul away materials you wish to be rid of.
With competing services, such as roll-off Dumpsters and bins, the work is up to the individual and all of the materials hauled away go straight to a landfill. Junk King takes the labor and struggle out of hauling junk to a dumpster by providing a team to move junk to a truck and whisk it away.
“Point your finger and we’ll haul it. There’s no job too big or too small. Even if you’re not sure how to get rid of it, or can’t, we can,” Porter said, “we’ll sweep up afterwards, leaving you unburdened and your home or business uncluttered.”
This dedication to customer service has helped Junk King become something of a household (and business world) name in removal services.
“Forty percent of our business comes from referrals or is repeat business,” Porter said. “This is a huge accomplishment for a small business to have achieved in its first year and something we’re very proud of. … We do right by people and they tell their friends.”
This level of customer service even recently won Junk King the coveted Super Service Award from the service review site Angie’s List for receiving an “A” review by every single customer serviced in 2012.
This excellence stems from a philosophy Porter keeps close in mind when considering new employees. “I love meeting people, making new connections, and meeting people on a personal level,” said Porter, “and so do my employees.”
In fact, customer service training is something Junk King’s employees go through extensively and something everyone at Junk King takes very seriously. It is not unusual for Junk King’s personable staff to grow on someone. Porter stated that some repeat customers will even ask for specific teams by name, hoping to have them come again.
Junk King doesn’t stop excelling after the truck rolls away, though. The company makes it a point to give back to the local community and the environment. Eighty percent of the materials hauled away are either repurposed or recycled and much of it is given to charities. Recently, Junk King delivered 82 televisions to the Salvation Army and two truckloads of building materials to Habitat For Humanity. Porter said that ideally, Junk King works to aid a charity each month.
By recycling or reusing most of the materials it hauls away, Junk King prevents a lot of items from ending up in a landfill. This in turn helps customers out by reducing the price Junk King pays for dumping fees at landfills, bringing the price of Junk King’s service down in turn. By being smart about disposal, the company makes a circle in which everyone wins—the customer, the community and the environment.
