LATHAM – The Colonie Police Department received a 911 call on Tuesday, Nov 15 at 8:47 p.m. reporting a vehicle crash at Troy-Schenectady Road (Route 7) and Service Road in Latham. Responding officers found two heavily damaged vehicles blocking the westbound lanes, a 2019 Volkswagen and a 2020 Jeep.
Witnesses reported the Jeep driving erratically before the crash and ultimately crossing from the eastbound lane, through the median turn lane and into the path of the Volkswagen which was headed westbound. The head-on collision caused heavy front-end damage to both vehicles and the Jeep wound up on its side in the roadway.
The driver of the Volkswagen was Rosa Camaj, 40, of Colonie and the Jeep was driven by Frederick Knuetter, 63, of Hoosick Falls. Latham Fire Department and Verdoy Fire Department responded and extricated the drivers who were both taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital by Colonie EMS with severe injuries.
Both westbound lanes were closed and traffic was detoured around the area. One eastbound lane was also closed. All lanes were reopened at approximately 12:10 a.m.
The Colonie Police Traffic Division is investigating the crash and is asking any member of the public who may have witnessed it or may have other information regarding it, to contact them at 518 783-2744.
