COLONIE — A dozen inmates at the Albany County jail were charged with inciting a riot, said Sheriff Craig Apple on Friday, May 13.
Apple said the inmates tied off gates that prevented staff from entering the tier where they were housed and obstructed the view of the area. They also gathered weapons consisting of brooms, mops and other contraband and they covered themselves with towels and shirts to conceal their ID.
To hinder efforts by correction officers, the inmates spread soap and water on the housing unit floors.
“Multiple attempts were made in an attempt to de-escalate the situation in which the inmates responded with threats and attempts to further incite and injure staff,” Apple said in a statement. “Inmates were given an opportunity to remain uninvolved with negative results.”
The Corrections Emergency Response Team was able to subdue the inmates activities, Apple said. Two inmates suffered minor injuries, according to reports.
The inmates were upset, Apple is reported as saying, because family members were not allowed to bring them extra linens like towels and sheets and they demanded one CO be removed from their housing section.
The 12 inmates were charged with several additional crimes and will be arraigned at the Town of Colonie Court.
