COLONIE — Alcohol and speed played a factor in the Christmas Day traffic accident on Central Avenue that killed a 24-year-old Schenectady man.
Veeshram Ramdeo, 17, of Schenectady, was travelling eastbound near the Lisha Kill Reformed Church at around 7 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the westbound lane and struck a utility pole with enough force to split the 2001 Audi in half.
Three passengers were ejected from the vehicle.
Lahraj Premnauth was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers, both of Schenectady, were treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital for critical injuries and have since been released.
Ramdeo remains under medical care, according to Colonie Lt. Robert Donnelly.
Speed was a factor, police said on the day of the crash, but on Friday, Jan. 31 they announced alcohol was also a factor. Police have not said if he will face criminal charges.
