Law enforcement will be on the lookout for drunk drivers from Friday, Aug. 17, through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 3, traditionally a time when motorists hit the roadways in elevated numbers.
“Traffic safety is a top priority, and each day troopers work to ensure the well-being of all those who utilize New York’s roadways,” said Superintendent George Beach II. “During this campaign, we will step up our enforcement efforts to remove intoxicated, drug impaired and distracted drivers from our roadways. We have zero tolerance for reckless individuals who choose to drive while impaired.”
Drivers can expect to see more sobriety checkpoints, more troopers on major highways and troopers will be watching for distracted drivers, occupants who are not buckled up and those who violate the Move Over Law.
State Police, which will team with local law enforcement throughout the state, will be using marked patrol cars and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles as part of the operation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk driving killed 10,497 people in 2016. On average, one person is killed every 50 minutes in an alcohol-impaired driving crash.
Over Labor Day Weekend 2017, State Police made 193 DWI arrests and issued more than 21,900 tickets.
