BETHLEHEM—Supervisor David VanLuven is going door to door on Delaware Avenue today, Thursday, April 19, to inform local business owners of the schedule to finish the clean up/wrap up portion of the Delaware Avenue Hamlet Streetscape Enhancement Project that began more than a year ago.
Between Monday, April 23 and Friday, May 18, business owners and patrons, residents and anyone traveling on Delaware Avenue through the hamlet of Delmar will notice work and landscaping being done to complete the $3.1 million project to beautify the stretch of road between Elsmere Avenue and Adams Street.
According to the town, the long winter took a toll on new planting and curbs installed last fall, and there were also some issues with sidewalk panels. Work will be done to replace defective sidewalks and damaged curbs, as well as replacement and re-seeding of muddy areas.
Additionally, several finishing touched scheduled to be completed this spring will be completed: installment of decorative crosswalks; pavement lines; hamlet signs; and a large mural, which will be mounted on the abutments on either side of the Delaware Bridge, between Hudson Avenue and Oakwood Place. The mural will stand seven feet tall and 33 feet long on each side, according to Planning Director Rob Leslie, and highlights each of the neighborhoods and hamlets throughout the town, depicting images of daily life in Bethlehem.
According to VanLuven, there will be no detours during this time and Delaware Avenue will remain open to traffic. “We just want to be sure that everyone is aware of what’s going on,” he said. “And that they know they can get in touch with us with any questions or concerns.”
