MALTA — After less than a year, 106.1 WAIX-FM unceremoniously flipped the switch, leaving its “independent experience” on the AM dial.
Empire Broadcasting changed the format on its FM station on Monday, March 12. A terse message on the station’s Facebook page officially announced the change: “The X has moved to 900 AM… All your favorites are now on 900AM!”
The X, known for its devotion to local music under its independent format, was replaced by a Top 40 program under the resurrected moniker“The Jockey.”
The Jockey was last broadcast on 101.3 WJKE-FM before that frequency was sold to Education Media Foundation last November.
“We’re very disappointed and hope management reverses this decision,” stated Jenn Newman Mele. The radio station had just sponsored the Dustin Mele Memorial Concert in Troy over the weekend.
