ALBANY — Thus far, for Albany Public Library’s Reading Music series, songwriter Michael Eck has penned a clutch of murder ballads based on actual local cases and a brace of tunes based on John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden.” Now, he turns his eye towards minimalist fiction with “Signals: Songs from Raymond Carver.”

Eck will perform “Signals” Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Local History Room at the Albany Public Library, 161 Washington Ave. in Albany. Admission is free.

Reading Music, which challenges area musicians to respond to classic literature with original music, has inspired others including M.R. Poulopoulos, Zan Strumfeld, Matt Durfee, Tom McWatters and Gail Sparlin, authors have included Steinbeck, William Kennedy, Philip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut and Roald Dahl.

For more information, visit albanypubliclibrary.org or call the library at 427-4300.
