The funeral home business creates a delicate balance. Directors must offer individualized services without creating a debt a family cannot recover from.
Such is the balance that Stephen Meyers — second-generation director of Meyers Funeral Home in Delmar — strives for every day.
“The challenges today are cost efficiency for the bereaved and flexibility,” said Meyers. “By flexibility, it’s meeting the family’s needs and expectations.”
Meyers Funeral Home has been serving the region for nearly five decades at its location at 741 Delaware Ave. Stephen’s father, Ben Meyers, began the funeral home in the late 1960s, and though Ben handed the reins over to Stephen a couple of years ago, he remains involved in the busisness.
“He says he’s retired, but he’s still involved in all the day-to-day stuff,” Stephen said of his father. “He still does all of the yelling.”
Stephen is carrying on Ben’s philosophy of giving families what they need in a funeral at an affordable price.
“We’re very flexible and accommodating for the bereaved families,” said Stephen.
Funerals at Meyers can range from religious and military to non-traditional, and Stephen said he can tell stories about all the different services the home has hosted.
“As I like to said, no two people are alike. So, why should their funerals be?” said Meyers.
And no matter what the request from the family is, Stephen said he will fulfill it.
“I feel I’m very personable. I can relate to anyone,” said Meyers. “I feel that’s what makes me unique.”
