Drivers who rely on I-87 to get around should keep in mind that exit access-points in the Town of Colonie will be closed for several hours this weekend and the following, weather permitting. According to the Department of Transportation, work will start tonight, Friday, Sept. 25, and continue until tomorrow, Sept. 26, for Exit 4’s on- and off-ramps northbound. Work on the Exit 4 and 5 southbound on-ramps will begin next weekend, starting Friday, Oct. 2, and continue into Saturday, Oct. 3. Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, Sept. 25, until early Saturday morning, Sept. 26, the northbound off-ramp for Exit 4 will be closed. DOT said there will be a detour up to Exit 5 for Watervliet-Shaker Road and then back south on I-87 for those who want to access the northern end of Wolf Road. Northbound motorists will have access to Wolf Road from Exit 2 as well, said DOT. Once the northbound off-ramp work is complete, the on-ramp for Exit 4 on the northern end of Wolf Road will be closed for several hours Saturday, Sept. 26. Motorists can access the northbound Northway by detouring to Old Wolf Road to Watervliet-Shaker Road for the Exit 5 entrance. Work will then continue next weekend, starting Friday, Oct. 2. DOT said the Exit 5 southbound on-ramp from Watervliet-Shaker Road in Colonie should be closed Friday night until the next Saturday morning. Drivers will be detoured to the southbound Exit 4 on-ramp on Albany Shaker Road. When the Exit 5 work is complete, the southbound on-ramp for Exit 4 by the Desmond hotel will close for several hours Saturday, Oct. 3. A detour will direct to Exit 5 southbound on Route 155. Drivers who rely on either exit get to Albany International Airport may want to adjust their travel times. There will be signed directing motorists to the airport.
