Has your child ever wanted to meet Captain America, Thor, R2D2, or Darth Vader? They can do that and much more at the Hannaford Kidz Expo Saturday, March 7, at the Empire State Plaza.
The Kidz Expo is returning for its 10th year and showcases more than 100 vendors to appeal towards every child’s interests and hobbies. While the kids are busy exploring, parents will have the opportunity to learn about summer camps, educational programs and hundreds of other resources available for families in the surrounding communities.
“We’re really excited about the Marvel characters coming. It’s a really great thing for us to have for the kids on the 10th anniversary,” said event organizer Joe Brill.
The kids will not only be able to meet characters from Marvel, but Star Wars will also be on hand to meet families through the 501st Legion. Other activities include laser tag, a reptile adventure, shows by Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey and ice skating at Empire State Plaza.
“Each year, this event has gotten bigger and bigger,” said Brill. “This year, we’re expecting 10,000 people, and it’s been great to see it grow and become a popular event for Capital Region families. It’s a full day with fun activities for kids, but is also a resource for parents about different types of classes, camps and educational programs for their children.”
Kidz Expo is also a fun way for children to experience different types sports and activities to see if they might be interested in the future. The event will host several dance and gymnastics groups, tennis with Sportime Schenectady and short lessons with Northeastern New York PGA.
Doug Evans of Northeastern New York PGA Junior Golf Association in Colonie, said his organization has been attending Kidz Expo for seven years, and they love being there.
“We have 16 golf professionals who volunteer their time with the kids,” said Evans. “It’s an important aspect in order for us to grow the game with the next generation of golfers.”
Older kids will be able to hit balls into a net, with the golf pros on hand to critique their swing. Younger kids will be able to putt some balls using plastic clubs. If any kids then seem interested in the game, parents are given information on local courses in their area that have kids programs. There’s also information on golf camps and clinics.
Evans said the game of golf can teach kids self-restraint and regulation. There’s also a health aspect by having to walk to each hole.
“In golf, one’s responsible of their own game and score,” said Evans. “There’s no referee like in other games. It teaches honesty, and that’s important for kids growing up.”
Brill said Kidz Expo organizers are also thankful for the continued support of Hannaford and their other local sponsors. He did not think the event would have been able to grow without their help.
“Hannaford has been willing to support us every year, and it’s good they are willing to keep coming back,” said Brill.
The event will encompass the entire convention hall, all seven meeting rooms, the Swyer Theatre at the Egg and about half of the concourse.
The free event is open to everyone. Pick up the March edition of Capital District Parent Pages for more information, maps and schedules.
