Whether you are signed up for the classroom party, heading out to a gathering or just looking for a little family fun, this fruit tree is certain to be the centerpiece at any function. I often refer to projects like these as “crafting with food,” where families can spend time cooking and creating together. It’s a double dipper in one sense, but no double dipping in the dip is allowed!
Enjoy the holidays, and I hope you have a chance to mess it up and mix it up in your kitchen all month long.
Festive Fruit Tree
Supplies Needed:
9-inch Styrofoam cone
Colored toothpicks
Green grapes
Red grapes
Pineapple
Blueberries
Star fondant cutter
Starting at the bottom, add the red grapes to the Styrofoam by inserting the toothpick into the grape, leaving a portion exposed and then inserting the exposed part into the tree base. Continue the process until you have created a trail around the cone to look like garland.
Starting at the bottom again, add the green grapes in the same fashion to fill the entire tree. Leave the very top uncovered.
Create a star out of a slice of pineapple by using a star-shaped fondant cutter. Add it to the top with a toothpick.
Skewer blueberries on toothpicks and intermittently place them throughout the tree to add ornaments. The blueberry ornaments will rest on top of the green grapes, but will be held by the base.
Pomegranate Fruit Dip
4 ounces light whipped topping
3 ounces low-fat vanilla yogurt
2 tablespoons 100 percent pomegranate juice
Fold the whipped topping and vanilla yogurt together. Fold in the pomegranate juice until all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed together. Serve chilled.
