Popular folk singers Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion headline the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s Americana Family Day on Sunday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
The event is held in conjunction with the Clark’s summer exhibitions of works by iconic American artists Winslow Homer and George Inness. “Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History” and “George Inness: Gifts from Frank and Family Day is one of the Clark’s most popular events of the season, and this summer’s event is packed with fun activities for the whole family from art and music to fly fishing and horseshoes.
Scheduled events include:
Hay rides, sack races, and an egg toss contest
Sing-along with sea shanties
Horseshoes, shuttlecock, and other period lawn games
Pickle-eating and pie-eating contests
Nineteenth-century folktales with storyteller Tim Van Egmond
Appearance by Howard Wright as President Abraham Lincoln
Art-making projects including creating the sea in a jar, nautical tote bags, Victorian-era optical illusions, and sailors’ valentines
Fly fishing lessons
Print-making workshop led by local artist Jay Foxe
Performances by a barbershop quartet
“Your Day in Court,” a chance to participate in a court case and learn about the history of American justice
“The District School,” a step back in time to a typical 1800s school
Lincoln log house building
Photo opportunities in a nineteenth-century photo booth
Appearances by street performers The Silver Swimmers
Local vendors will offer an array of food and beverages for sale, including international cuisine, pizza and barbecued fare.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by the information desk to pick up a family guide, which accompanies Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History and is an excellent way to engage children with the exhibition.
