The Saratoga Springs School District is to have a new leader in Michael Piccirillo, who will step up as superintendent when Janice White leaves the district this summer.
Piccirillo is assistant superintendent for secondary education in Saratoga Springs, a position he has held since 2007. He’s been in the education field for 25 years.
The school board is expected to vote on the appointment during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
“Based on his career achievements, successful service as assistant superintendent for secondary education and demonstrated vision about the future of public education, Michael Piccirillo is the ideal superintendent for Saratoga Springs at this time,” said Regina Gapczynski, president of the Board of Education, in a statement.
“His singular experience and expertise and his particular approach to leadership and learning will allow him to build on Dr. White’s legacy while developing the next generation of leadership, and continuing the next level of excellence that is at our district,” Gapczynski continued.
In his five years with the SSCSD Piccirillo has supervised the 6-12 instructional program; facilitated the district Educational Development Achievement Council for review of K-12 instructional programs; overseen the district’s K-12 Gifted and Talented and enrichment programming; and developed 21st Century and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programming.
“Mike Piccirillo is grounded in a core belief about the critical role that education plays in creating opportunities for all children,” said White, who announced in October that she will retire July 1. “He has been a contributing force responsible for the improvements in achievement and accountability for students in the Saratoga Springs City School District. I am confident in the continuing success of the district under his leadership.”
Piccirillo and his wife Diane, a former elementary school teacher, live in the town of Wilton in the Saratoga Springs City School District. Their daughter, Emma Rose, attends third grade at the Dorothy Nolan Elementary School.
