The Bethlehem Central School District community is mourning the loss of Mary Jane Hughes, who passed away Thursday, Dec. 29 after a battle with brain cancer.
Hughes first taught music and string instruments in Bethlehem in 1982 and guided young musicians for nearly three decades. She went on medical leave in 2010 and retired in 2011.
A week before she passed, Hughes was visited by former Superintendent Michael Tebbano and BC Music Director David Norman. The two gave Hughes a plaque honoring her years of service to the district.
On the district’s website, Norman said Hughes leaves a legacy of “excellence, enthusiasm and tireless dedication.”
Before her passing, Hughes asked that her students play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” before her funeral mass.
Any student of Mrs. Hughes that would like to play should contact Norman by email at [email protected]. The email should include your name and what instrument you plan to play. The mass will be held Monday, Jan. 2 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar. Students interested in playing should arrive at the hall of the church’s small chapel by 9:00 a.m.
Calling hours for Hughes will be held Sunday, Jan. 1 from 3-7 p.m. at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar.
