Election Day is only two weeks away and on Wednesday, Nov. 2, both Town of Colonie candidates for supervisor will meet for a debate in which they will do their best to win over voters and lay out their plans for the future of the town.
The event will be hosted by the Colonie Chamber of Commerce, Capital Area Council of Churches, the League of Women Voters of Albany County and the Spotlight Newspapers. The debate will be moderated by Mary Barry, president of the League of Women Voters of Albany County. She will ask questions submitted by audience members on index cards handed out before the event.
Colonie Supervisor Paula Mahan said she is looking forward to the debate and is ready to discuss the issues that are present in the town and also promote some of the accomplishments her administration has achieved in the last three years.
“We have a lot of accomplishments and we’re moving in a positive direction,” Mahan said. “I’ll have the opportunity to share current information with the public. I think it should be a very informative night for those attending and listening.”
Republican candidate for supervisor Denise Sheehan said she s also excited about the debate but said she is disappointed there will only be one. She said her campaign reached out to Mahan’s camp in hopes of doing another debate but Sheehan said those offers were rebuffed.
“I think it will be extremely important, debates are important to the election process,” Sheehan said. “I think it’s a great way to ensure the voters are informed on the stances we’ve taken on finances, the landfill, economic development and senior programs as well.”
The debate will take place at the Holiday Inn in Albany at 205 Wolf Road and will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Audience members will be provided index cards to write their questions on, and no signs or other campaign material may displayed before or during the debate. Only accredited media will be allowed to take photos, video or audio recordings.
