In its first ever `Speed Week,` the New York State Police Troop G issued 1,200 speeding tickets between Aug.8 and 14.
This special week was held to coincide with the NASCAR Race at Watkins Glen International Raceway which took place on Aug. 14. According to the press release, the month of August has the highest number of speed fatalities.
`No one likes to get a ticket, and frankly, we don’t like to give them,` said Troop G Commander Major William S. Sprague. `However, unsafe speed remains the leading contributing factor in motor vehicle fatal crashes.`
Troopers also issued 1,309 other tickets for various other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations, which included 41 drunk driving incidents and 187 seatbelt infractions.
