UPDATE: The Schenectady County Department of Environmental Health lifted the Boil Water Order as of 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21. As a precaution, residents are asked to flush all water lines.
The Schenectady County Environmental Health Department issued a boil water advisory on Thursday, Aug. 18, for parts of Glenville following a water main break.
The affected areas include:
Portion of Sacandaga Road between Van Voast Lane and Bolt Road
All of Ridge Road
All of Rector Road
All of Closson Road
Residents in these areas are advised by the county Public Health Department to boil all water for drinking and culinary purposes.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, the water system lost pressure due to a water main break, according to county officials. When the distribution pipes lose pressure it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes could enter the system.
Boil water for two minutes and let it cool before using, county officials said, or use bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice, said health officials.
Once the water main break is repaired there may be air in your water lines. Your water may also look cloudy. Running all your faucets for a period of time should allow the water to run clear again. Although, county officials said to run all your faucets several times for five minutes or so whether your water looks cloudy or not.
