Luis F. Aleman, Jr, 24, from Hoboken, NJ was arrested by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Clifton Park on Thursday, July 21, and charged with grand larceny in the second degree and grand larceny in the third degree following a lengthy investigation concerning the theft of gold coins and money from a 70-year-old Rexford resident, according to police reports.
It is alleged that Aleman sought out his victim through a previous business contact and through a confidence scheme, he received gold coins valued at $60,000 and monies exceeding $15,000, according to police reports. Aleman had arranged to sell the gold coins for an agreed price and failed to return the proceeds from the sale, said police.
In addition to the gold coin scam, Aleman allegedly agreed to purchase a life insurance policy for a $15,000 fee and then failed to obtain the policy, keeping the proceeds, according to police reports.
Aleman was arrested at the Schenectady Amtrak Station after he attempted to meet his victim in person, said police, and additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The New York State Police are requesting that any person who may have had similar dealings with Aleman to call 383-8583.
