Police say a high-speed chase early this morning in Colonie reached speeds of over 100 mph before a suspect crashed his vehicle.
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ryan C. Jones, 18, of Albany, on charges he sped off when police tried to pull his vehicle over, crashed it and then fled into the woods.
Police said that at about 2:45 a.m. two unidentified females ran up to a deputy’s patrol car at the Mobil gas station at the intersection of routes 155 and 5 in the Town of Colonie and complained of a man in a dark colored minivan who was trying to get them into the vehicle. As the spoke to the officer, the van started to leave the gas station.
When the deputy attempted to pull Jones over he did stop briefly, but then sped off when the deputy exited his vehicle, according to police. The chase proceeded down Route 155 at speeds over 100 mph until the van crashed into a guardrail, street pole and power transformer, which knocked out power and traffic signals in the area, police said.
Jones then allegedly fled on foot into a wooded area, where he was apprehended.
Jones was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment (a felony), fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and a number of traffic law infractions.
He was remanded to Albany County jail without bail, and police said an investigation is continuing.
