BC grad will run SAT prep course this summer
When most college students come home for the summer, they look for internships, steady work or even odd jobs.
Bethlehem Central graduate and Brown University student David Rosen will be doing those things, but he’ll also be running his own business, of a sort. He’s tutoring for the SAT test under the Revolutionary Prep course, which equips young tutors with the tools to run their own workshops.
The program generally taps talent from Ivy League schools and only uses tutors who scored extremely high marks on their SATs (Rosen scored a 2,310 out of a possible 2,400, well within the 99th percentile).
Rosen is setting up his own branch, finding students and setting up course plans. It’s basically like a small-scale business.
I worked a nine-to-five job last summer, so it’s hard to make myself get up in the morning and everything, he said. `But it’s nice to have the flexibility.`
The SAT, or Scholastic Aptitude Test, has been the bane of legions of high school students for just over a century. Today, it’s made up of three sections (math, vocabulary and writing) and students can score a possible 2,400 points altogether.
Though it’s been deemphasized somewhat in recent years, a strong showing on the SAT is still considered a necessary part of any applicant’s submissions to top-tiered undergrad programs. For this reason alone, an entire industry is centered on preparing the hundreds of thousands of students who will take the exam every year.
Rosen realizes there’s quite a bit of competition out there, and that he’s vying against established names like Kaplan and Princeton Review for pupils.
`I think it comes down to three things,` he said of the Revolution program. `We have better instructors, we’re recruited from Ivy League schools … our courses are three weeks, so it’s really intense … and the last thing is we just have great results.`
According to Rosen, Revolution students see a 250-point improvement on average.
The course is a three-week intensive schedule in a small group. Rosen is looking to keep classes to around seven students, who will also have one-on-one time with him. The first class starts July 3, and will be held at St. Stephens Church in Delmar.
