The Town of Bethlehem will be honoring a Delmar optometrist slain in Afghanistan last year with the installation of a memorial bench and plaque on the lawn of Town Hall Friday, April 29.
Tom Little and nine other members of an international aid team were killed last August while traveling in a remote area of the war-torn country. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Little, while keeping a home in Bethlehem, spent much of his time administering eye care in the poor, rural areas of Afghanistan. He was well known in that country for his years of humanitarian work.
Earlier this year, Little’s wife accepted the Medal of Freedom on her husband’s behalf from President Barack Obama. It’s the U.S.’s highest civilian honor.
Libby Little will be out of the country for Friday’s ceremony, but friends and other members of the Little family are expected to be on hand. The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on the Delaware Avenue side of Town Hall and will be open to the public.`
