Superintendent Michael Tebbano will be retiring from his post in the Bethlehem Central School District at the end of 2011.
The Board of Education is expected accept Tebbano’s notice of retirement at its next meeting on Wednesday, March 30, when it is also expected a decision will be made on the possible closure of an elementary school.
A statement on the district’s website indicated Tebbano wanted to leave as much time as possible for the district to choose a successor, and said Capital Region BOCES District Superintendent Charles Dedrick will likely be tapped as consultant for the search process.
Tebbano started as superintendent in 2008. Since then, he’s overseen several difficult budget processes, as state aid to school districts across the state has shrunk. The school board is now in the midst of closing a $4 million budget gap.
Earlier in his career, Tebbano was an administrator at various levels and, before that, worked as a music teacher. He’s worked as an educator fro nearly 40 years.
In that time, I have been fortunate to work with many, many wonderful people, and most importantly, outstanding students, he said in a statement. `There will be a time for looking back, but now is not it. The work in front of us at the moment is too important.“
