On Wednesday, March 16, at 7:15 a.m., the Westmere Fire Department received a call from 9 York Road for a suspected electrical fire at the home.
Neighbors reported seeing fire in the house and also called 911.
A structure fire was confirmed by the first arriving units, who also verified that all of the residents had been evacuated from the single-family home. Fire and smoke were visible from the side of the building, coming from a window. A crew from Westmere Fire Department started an initial attack on the fire in order to knock it down. Other responding companies assisted with fire suppression and ventilation efforts.
According to fire department officials, the fire was under control within 20 minutes after the arrival of the first units. The fire appears to be primarily contained to a first floor bedroom with associated smoke, water and related damage to other areas of the home.
One firefighter was transported to an area hospital for unspecified injuries. Westmere Information Officer Sean Maguire said on Friday that the firefighter is still recovering.
He also said the cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation.
The Westmere Fire Department was assisted by mutual aid companies from the Guilderland, McKownville, North Bethlehem and Fort Hunter Fire Departments. Emergency medical support was provided by Gulderland EMS, Western Turnpike Rescue Squad and Five Quad Volunteer Ambulance Service (University at Albany).
