Twenty-one Saratoga Springs High School students were disciplined for alcohol use following a March 4 dance at the school, according to information from the school district.
Two students were transported to Saratoga Hospital during the dance but were released following treatment and are in good health, said high school principal Brett Miller in a statement.
The students involved were believed to have been drinking before arriving at the dance.
We’ve had numerous meetings with students and parents, and most have been very supportive, said Miller. `We take this situation very seriously because we’re concerned about our students, and want to ensure a safe environment for them.`
Repeated efforts by The Spotlight to reach Miller for further comment and to discover the nature of the disciplinary measures were unsuccessful.
Superintendent Janice White said the school’s response underscores the district’s position on underage drinking.
`It is unacceptable and it will not be tolerated. Our schools and all school activities are expected to be safe places for students, staff and the entire community,` said White in a statement.
White said the school district has `a long history` of offering programs for students and parents that discuss the hazards of substance abuse, including a 10-year collaborative effort with the Saratoga Partnership for Prevention.
