The Mohonasen girls basketball team needed a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Guilderland 38-36 in Tuesday’s Suburban Council South Division opener in Guilderland.
The Mighty Warriors (1-0 league, 1-0 overall) fell behind 27-25 after scoring only four points in the third quarter, but they came back with a 13-point fourth quarter to pull out the victory.
Kelsey Cowell scored 15 points to lead Mohonasen’s offense. Cowell was a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line.
Erin Mossop scored 10 points for Guilderland (0-1, 0-1), which trailed 21-18 at halftime.
Mohonasen returns to action Friday when it hosts Bethlehem in a South Division contest.
In other girls basketball action Tuesday, Niskayuna fell to Saratoga Springs 35-32 in a Suburban Council North Division game, while Watervliet downed Schalmont 75-38 in a Colonial Council contest.
Niskayuna (0-1, 0-1) went on a 12-2 run in the third quarter to open up a 28-17 lead, but Saratoga (1-0, 1-0) outscored the Silver Warriors 18-4 in the fourth quarter to pull out the three-point win.
Britta Moberg scored 10 points to lead a balanced Saratoga attack. Heather Lewis and Emiliy Petruccione each added eight points for the Blue Streaks.
Ashley McCaughan netted 10 points for Niskayuna in the loss. Caroline Hanks and Kayla Treanor chipped in six points apiece.
Niskayuna hosts Shaker Friday in a Suburban Council North Division game.
Schalmont (1-1, 2-1) suffered its first setback of the season against a Watervliet team seeking another Colonial Council title. The Cannoneers (2-0, 2-0) ran out to a 23-4 lead in the first quarter, and they never looked back.
Lashana Tolliver scored 20 points to lead Watervliet’s offense. Kate Murray had 15 points, and Alysa Chartrand added 13 points. Jessica Bellai recorded 16 points, and Hailee Metzold contributed 13 points for Schalmont.
The Sabres entered Tuesday’s game off a 38-29 Colonial Council victory over Cobleskill-Richmondville last Friday in Rotterdam. The Sabres outscored the Bulldogs 25-14 in the second half to earn the victory.
Bellai had a big game for Schalmont. The junior guard scored 21 points and added six steals to lead the Sabres at both ends of the floor. Karley Murray chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Schalmont plays Albany Academy for Girls Friday.`
