The Mohonasen-Schalmont boys swim team began its season Tuesday by defeating Schenectady 97-87.
The Patriots pulled within six points midway through the meet when they took two of the top three places in the 100-yard freestyle, but Mohonasen-Schalmont swept the top three places in the 500 freestyle to pull away for good.
Vincent Fernandez led Mohonasen-Schalmont with victories in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Fernandez won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.00, and he took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:49.84. Teammates Cody Nelson (second, 5:53.46) and Brandon Walter (third, 6:06.4) completed Mohonasen-Schalmont’s sweep in the 500 freestyle.
Jack Guarneri, Matthew Fisher and Allen McClearnen added individual vic-tories for Mohonasen-Schalmont. Guarneri finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.59 seconds, while Fisher won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.89. McClearnen took first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.88.
In other boys swimming action Tuesday, Niskayuna opened its season with a 106-74 victory over Saratoga Springs. The outcome was never in doubt after the Silver Warriors took the top two places in the 200-yard individual medley and swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle. Those efforts helped Niskayuna build a 43-19 lead, and Saratoga never recovered.
Emerson Wells led the Silver Warriors with victories in the 200- and the 500-yard freestyle races. Wells finished with a time of 1:54.25 in the 200 freestyle and a time of 5:05.06 in the 500 freestyle.
Nick Wolfe was the top swimmer in Niskayuna’s pack during the 50-yard freestyle. Wolfe won with a time of 24.48 seconds, .19 seconds ahead of runner-up Ryan Burke and .37 seconds ahead of third-place swimmer Alexander Lee.
Lee came back to win the 100-yard butterfly for Niskayuna. Evan Melby (200 individual medley), Josh Dodway (diving), Michael Henze (100 freestyle) and Ethan Strayer (100 backstroke) also won their individual events.`
