A 24-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning after Saratoga Springs Police say they found his truck in the reflecting pool in front of the Spirit of Life statue in Congress Park.
At 3:01 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, police located a red Ford Escape in the reflecting pool in front of the Spirit of Life statue in Congress Park. According to police reports, the vehicle had apparently been driven across several of the fields in Congress Park before it crashed into the reflecting pool and the driver had fled from the scene on foot prior to police arriving at the scene.
Following an investigation, the driver was located near the Whitmore Court Apartments on Crescent Street and the driver, Andres Ortiz of Mount Vernon Road in Amherst was subsequently arrested for DWI and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, according to police reports.
The vehicle sustained damage to the front end and undercarriage and was towed. The value of the damage to the reflecting pool and the fields has not yet been determined. There was no water in the reflecting pool at the time of the crash, said police.
Ortiz was released after being arraigned in City Court and will appear again in court on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The Spirit of Life is a valued city treasure and I would like to thank the responding officers for their quick apprehension of the individual responsible for this act, said Commissioner of Public Safety Richard Wirth in a statement.
