The Colonie boys soccer team’s season ended abruptly.
Tanner MacIvor scored the game-winning goal six minutes into the second overtime period to lift Niskayuna to a 2-1 victory over the Garnet Raiders in Monday’s Section II Class AA quarterfinal game in Colonie.
We had plenty of opportunities to score, but we were unable to find the game winner, said Colonie coach Mike Trimarchi.
Seeded third out of the Suburban Council, Colonie (10-7-1) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Massimo Smiroldo scored off a pass from Edin Hadjmuratovic. But Phil Weeber tallied with 12 minutes left in the second half to tie the game for the fifth-seeded Silver Warriors (10-6-2).
After a scoreless first overtime period, Niskayuna got the break it needed six minutes into the second 10-minute overtime stanza. Off a corner kick, the ball was kicked around in front of the Colonie goal before MacIvor lofted a shot over goaltender Todd Lawson.
`There was a scramble in front, and somehow it got poked in,` said Trimarchi.
Niskayuna’s victory helped set up an all-Suburban Council North Division final four for Thursday’s semifinals at Colonie. The Silver Warriors meet North Division champion Saratoga Springs (12-2-3) at 5 p.m., followed by a battle between Ballston Spa (9-5-4) and Shenendehowa (6-5-7) at 7 p.m.
Saratoga advanced with a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Shaker (7-6-5) Mon-day afternoon.
Steve Celeste scored in the first half, and Ercan Kilic added a goal midway through the second half for the Blue Streaks. An own goal by Saratoga gave Shaker its point.“
