Younger BC students will be held to a new set of rules when attending sports games this fall.
Students below grade 9 will now have to be accompanied by an adult when attending any outdoor athletic game. The change come due to incidents of misconduct and inappropriate behavior by students who have been left unsupervised at these events, according to a letter from the district sent to parents.
The district suspended night games two years ago as a cost savings measure, but the upcoming homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 8 will be held under the lights, and it’s anticipated another evening game will be held in the fall for field hockey and soccer teams, funded by booster clubs.
Under the new policy, students who arrive to the games without proper supervision will be held until an adult can pick them up or attend the game with them.
`While the school district has chaperones available to supervise the games, we’ve become increasingly concerned about the safety of our elementary and middle school students. We believe that implementing this policy will help to ensure that our school activities are safe enough for everyone to enjoy,` read the letter from the district in part.“
