Feline Fest has been postponed along with cat adoptions at the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society after a litter of stray kittens tested positive for Panleukopenia.
Also known as feline distemper, Panleukopenia is a virus that is considered to be highly contagious with a limited survival rate, according to a press release put out by the Humane Society. The most vulnerable to the disease are kittens and cats without the proper vaccinations.
This issue coincides with Colonie’s
feral cat
problem.
The shelter reported it will not be accepting or giving out any cats until August 11. The fourth annual Feline Fest, scheduled for tomorrow August 5 through Sunday, August 8, will be rescheduled for later this month. The shelter asks for those wanting to adopt should call ahead of time before coming in.
The festival will see adult cats available for $35, as opposed to their regular price of $75, and kittens will be available for $50 instead of $100.
The cat and kitten adoptions at the PetSmart in Latham and Glenmont will continue since the felines had left the shelter before the first infection.
