A Clifton Park woman was arrested by Spa City police on Sunday, Aug. 1, after a downtown shoplifting spree, according to police reports.
Donna MacDonald,52, of Dutchess Path in Clifton Park was charged with one count of petit larceny, one count of possession of burglar’s tools and six counts of possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, all misdemeanors, according to police reports.
Around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, police received a report from a downtown business that a shoplifter had just stolen a couple hundred dollars worth of clothing and jewelry and had left the store prior to police arriving. Responding officers obtained a description of the suspect and then visited several other stores in the downtown area to provide them with the description of the suspect, said police.
Several hours later, around 5 p.m., police were called to a different Broadway business where one of the workers there had recognized the description of the suspect provided by officers earlier in the day, according to reports. Police responded and made contact with MacDonald, who was found in possession of several items that were later determined to have been stolen from different businesses on Broadway.
Police allege that MacDonald stole various items of clothing and jewelry from seven different businesses in the downtown area. The value of each larceny ranged from $77 to $364, with the total amount of merchandise recovered by police being just over $1,700. Police also allege that MacDonald used a pair of wire cutters to remove the security devices attached to come of the clothing.
This arrest was the result of excellent cooperation between the police officers on the beat and the store owners on Broadway. The police officer took the extra step of providing a suspect description to area stores and fortunately one of the store workers was alert enough to recognize the description and promptly notify police, said
Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Public Safety Richard Wirth in a statement.
