The Adirondack Region scholastic women’s soccer team picked up the gold medal by avenging its only loss at last week’s Empire State Games in Buffalo.
One day after losing to Western 2-1 in pool play, Adirondack responded with a 1-0 victory over the same region Sunday to pick up its second gold medal in the last three Empire State Games. It’s the region’s fifth ever gold in scholastic women’s soccer.
Shenendehowa’s Kristen Connors scored the gold medal game’s lone goal late in the first half, and Adirondack’s defense did the rest to secure the victory.
Adirondack opened the Games with a 3-1 victory over Central last Thursday. Connors tallied at the 30 minute mark, and Miranda Haraughty added the other two Adirondack goals to get their team started on the right foot.
Adirondack followed up that performance with a 2-0 victory over Hudson Valley last Friday. Haraughty and Meeghan Arno scored Adirondack’s goals, and goaltender Renae Cairns (Ballston Spa) stopped 10 shots to pick up the shutout.
Western got the jump on Adirondack in last Saturday’s final pool play game. The host region scored twice in the first half before Courtney Pierce (Gansevoort) tallied for Adirondack in the second half to cut the deficit to one goal.
The Adirondack open men’s division soccer team came close to earning a gold medal of its own, but it lost to Long Island 2-0 in Sunday’s gold medal game.
Steven Schneider scored in the first half, and Lino Pereira tallied in the second half for Long Island, which out-shot Adirondack 11-2. Former Shenendehowa goaltender Ryan Jones made nine saves for Adirondack.
The open men’s division team began the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Central last Friday. Randy Taylor and Alfred Karam (Clifton Park) scored Adirondack’s goals, and Jones made six saves in the victory.
Adirondack received a second-half goal from former Shen star Dane Mellon to defeat Western 2-1 last Saturday and advance to the gold medal game. Collin Legge tallied in the first half for Adirondack, and Jones stopped four of the five shots he faced to earn the victory.
Adirondack’s scholastic men’s soccer team finished fourth at the Empire State Games after losing to Long Island 4-0 in the bronze medal game Sunday. Bethlehem goaltender Alex Kessler made six saves, and Niskayuna netminder Christian Esposito had five saves for Adirondack, which was out-shot by Long Island 15-5.
Adirondack finished the Games with a 1-3 record, with its lone win coming last Thursday against Central. Connor Preece (Ballston Spa) tallied twice, and Chris Alescio (Scotia-Glenville) added the other goal in a 3-2 victory.

Both of Adirondack’s rugby teams reached the gold medal game in their respective divisions at the Empire State Games. The masters women’s team edged Western 15-10 to win the gold medal, while the masters men’s team lost to Western 36-10 to finish with the silver medal.
The Adirondack open men’s division volleyball team got to the gold medal match, where it lost to Western by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-14. The open women’s division volleyball team took home a bronze medal after posting a 4-5 record. Both of Adirondack’s scholastic teams failed to medal, though the scholastic men’s team finished with a 4-4 record. The scholastic women’s team finished with a 2-4 mark.
The Adirondack scholastic men’s and women’s lacrosse teams both reached the bronze medal game in Buffalo. The scholastic women picked up the bronze medal with an 11-6 victory over Central, while Western defeated Adirondack 13-7 in the scholastic men’s bronze medal contest Sunday.
Guilderland’s Erin Mossop recorded a hat trick to lead the Adirondack scholastic women’s team to victory over Central in the bronze medal game. Shaker’s Lauren Smith, Bridget Malicki and Adrianne Devine all tallied twice, as did Niskayuna’s Kayla Treanor.
It’s the first time that Adirondack has medaled in scholastic women’s lacrosse. The region has won bronze medals in scholastic men’s lacrosse in 2003 and 2004.
Adirondack’s scholastic men’s team had a chance to add to that total Sunday, but Western scored four of the first five goals and pulled away with a 5-2 fourth quarter for the 13-7 victory.
Shen’s Timothy Coll scored twice for Adirondack, and Shen goaltender Bob Wardwell made 10 saves. Niskayuna’s Tristan Sperry contributed a goal and an assist, while Niskayuna’s Brian Schlansker and Alex D’Amario also scored. Shaker’s Jimmy O’Brien added a goal in the bronze medal game.
Adirondack also picked up bronze medals in field hockey, scholastic women’s ice hockey, softball and scholastic women’s tennis.
Adirondack battled Western to a 1-1 tie in the field hockey bronze medal game before winning on penalty shots. Megan Meyers scored the bronze medal-winning goal in the shootout.
The Adirondack scholastic women’s ice hockey team secured the bronze medal with a 2-2 tie against Hudson Valley last Saturday. Monique Cornett and Taylor Marcellus tallied for Adirondack, which out-shot Hudson Valley 69-10.
Adirondack’s softball team beat Hudson Valley 10-2 in last Saturday’s bronze medal game. Former Shen star Michelle Connors had three hits and an RBI, while former Niskayuna’s standout Emily O’Donnell scored two runs and added a hit for Adirondack against Hudson Valley.
Adirondack’s scholastic women’s tennis team finished the round-robin tournament with a 3-2 victory to earn its bronze medal.`
