Kathleen M. Toombs announced her candidacy in the 2010 Glenville Town Justice race on June 14 and received the Democratic Party endorsement.
Actively volunteering in various organizations has been a priority for Toombs, while running her private law practice with partner Christina Watson Meier. Toombs has been practicing law for 12 years and she is a resident of Glenville.
Entering the race was the next step of community service, said Toombs. `I believe I am in touch with the values and desires of the community.`
Glenville Town Justice Paul Davenport’s term isn’t ending, but Richard Moran’s term is nearing the end and he chose not to run again. Republican Brian Mercy, of Scotia, is also running for the town justice vacancy. Since December, 2007, Mercy has severed as acting village justice in Scotia.
Toombs said she thought the current Town Justices were doing their jobs effectively. Making fair judgments and not `ruining the life` of first time offenders is something Toombs said she would do if elected.
`Town Court is very much about community relations,` said Toombs. `It is the petty things that are handled through the court and I think the justice has to have a sense of the community.“
