Albany County law enforcement officials said they helped stop an assault involving a large homemade prison shank, in a Friday, May 7, statement.
Members of the Albany County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit and Commanders at the Albany County Correctional Facility said they obtained information from inside the prison Michael Killion, 34, was planning an assault on another inmate.
Killion is a federal prisoner temporarily housed in the facility on bank robbery and weapons charges, according to police.
An investigation into the matter led police to find a weapon hidden under Killion’s mattress fashioned out of plastic storage container, the statment reads.
Police said Killion said he was keeping the weapon for self-defense.
Killion, of Rensselaer, has been in the facility since September of 2009 and felony charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and promoting prison contraband in the first degree, also a felony have been charged.
He is slated for arraignment in Colonie Town Court in the near future.
