The Town of Colonie wants Google to pick them.
The town submitted an application to be the market-test for Google Fiber, a new high-speed network expected to run 100 times faster than the national average.
If Colonie is chosen, Google would build the network in with the pledge to offer the new service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people, according to information from the town.
Town officials submitted the application on Wednesday, March 26.
`Colonie is a vibrant and progressive community that would be perfect for Google’s purposes,` said Town Supervisor Paula Mahan. `Our population of more than 80,000 grows to 150,000 on weekdays. Colonie is well-educated and diverse, and our location in the heart of Tech Valley means we are a very active partner in a culture of cutting-edge research and development.`
Mahan said the decision to apply was the result of a number of residents expressing interest. There are close to 1,100 entities vying for the opportunity to be the test-market.
Acxiom, a global data management organization, noted in the town’s application that it would be a good test area because it has a similar proportion of consumers as the rest of the U.S.
