The United States Postal Service has announced that the Niskayuna Branch Post Office building is up for sale, but town supervisor Joe Landry wants to ensure residents that a post office service will still be available in the town for the foreseeable future.
I have been informed that the United States Postal Service will continue operating at its current facility pending the sale of the building, said Landry in a March 5 release. `If the building is ever sold, the Postal Service has guaranteed me that they will relocate to an existing building within the Town of Niskayuna in close proximity to the current site where they will offer the exact same level of service now provided to customers who utilize the Niskayuna branch.`
With the 2023 Nott St. East location of the USPS up for sale, Landry has stated that the retail end of the postal service will stay in the area and relocate to an existing building in the town if the building is sold. The carriers that work out of the building, however, would most likely be consolidated with the downtown Schenectady office, according to Landry.
`For now, it is the status quo in Niskayuna,` said Landry. `Nothing is changing.` Landry said that Niskayuna will not lose the post office service in the town, unlike Scotia, who recently held public hearings in the Fall to successfully keep their local post office.
County Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage, D-Niskayuna, said that she will work with state and national representatives to ensure the residents of Niskayuna the use of the postal service.
`The Niskayuna Branch Post Office provides an invaluable service to the residents of Niskayuna and I will work with Congressman Tonko and our Senators, as I did with the Scotia Post Office, to ensure that the Postal Service continues to have a presence in Niskayuna,` said Savage in a March 5 statement.“
