Colonie police arrested a man after he pulled a shotgun on a cab driver near his residence.
At close to 1:33 a.m. Friday, March 5, Robert A. Monaghan, 28, allegedly pointed the shotgun at the cab driver after the driver dropped a woman, who was on crutches, off at the residence and helped her out of the cab, according to information from the police.
The incident occurred at 18 Van Buren Ave.
He didn’t provide us with too much information, said Lt. Robert Winn. `He believed he was protecting his property.
Officers attempted to call the house and give Monaghan a chance to surrender.
`Neighbors were notified to stay in their homes and efforts continued by phone and patrol unit P.A. system to have the male surrender,` according to information from the police.
Police said that the Colonie Police Department Special Services Team, or SWAT, was called but Monaghan surrendered ten minutes later. He exited the house at 3:10 a.m. with a knife in hand, but Winn said he quickly dropped the blade.
Police said they located the shotgun along with `four other long rifles,` and an investigation indicated that the shotgun was loaded.
He was charged with reckless endangerment, a felony and two misdemeanor charges; menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Colonie Justice Court and sent to Albany County jail.
